Know the edition of Windows 7 that you are using

You may perform the following to know the edition of Windows 7 that you are using:
  • Click Start , right-click Computer and click on Properties.
The edition of Windows 7 is displayed under Windows edition section.
You may also press Windows logo key + PAUSE.

Know how much RAM your computer has

You may perform the following to know how much RAM your computer has:
Click Start button . Right-click Computer and click on Properties. In System section, to the right of Installed memory (RAM), you can see the amount of RAM that your computer has.

Know the version of Internet Explorer that you are using

You may perform the following steps to know the version of Internet Explorer:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click on Help menu (Help menu is present in the Menu Bar. If you do not see the Menu bar then press the Alt key from the keyboard).
3. Click on About Internet Explorer.

Windows 7 editions

Reset the password using the password reset disk in Windows 7

If you are stuck on the login screen because of lost or forgotten password but have already created a password reset disk then perform the following steps to reset the password:
1. Enter a blank or incorrect password and then click Go button. Windows 7 will inform you that the user name or the password is incorrect.
2. Click OK to return to the Welcome screen. Now, click on the Reset password link to start the Password Reset wizard.
3. On the Welcome page, click Next.
4. On the Insert the Password Reset Disk page, select the USB flash disk or the floppy disk. Insert the password reset disk and then click Next.
5. On the Reset the User Account Password page, enter a new password and password hint. Click Next. Click Finish in the Completing the Forgotten Password Wizard page.

Minimum system requirements for Windows 7

The Windows 7 system requirements are as follows:
  • Processor Speed : 1GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • Memory (RAM) : 1GB RAM (32-bit) / 2GB RAM (64-bit)
  • HDD free space : 16GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20 GB (64-bit)
  • Graphics card : DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Select items that are not next to each other in Windows 7

You may perform the following to select the items (files, folders) that are not next to each other:
1. Click to select the first item.
2. From the keyboard, press the Ctrl key.
3. Keeping the Ctrl key in pressed state, click to select other items.

Know whether you are using 32-bit or 64-bit edition of Windows 7

Windows 7 comes with 32-bit and 64-bit editions. You can have either 32-bit or 64-bit edition installed depending on the type of processor that you have. To know which edition of Windows 7 is installed on your computer, perform the following:
1. Click Start button , right-click Computer and click on Properties to view basic information about your computer.
2. Under System, see the information to the right of System type:. It will be mentioned as 32-bit Operating System or 64-bit Operating System.

You may also press and Pause Break keys to view basic information about your computer.

Windows 7 Upgrade Paths

If you are upgrading your current version of Microsoft Windows to Windows 7 then make sure that you are not using the following versions of Microsoft Windows as they may not be upgraded to Windows 7.
  • Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Millennium, Windows XP, Windows Vista RTM, Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 M3, Windows 7 Beta, Windows 7 RC or Windows 7 IDS.
  • Windows NT Server 4.0, Windows 2000 Server, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2.

Know the version of Windows Media Center in Windows 7

You may perform the following steps to know the version of Media Center in Windows 7:
1. Open Windows Media Center by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs and then clicking Windows Media Center. You may also open Windows Media Center by clicking Start button , typing Windows Media Center in the Search programs and files and then clicking Windows Media Center from the Programs list.
2. From the Windows Media Center start screen, scroll and click Tasks and then click Settings.
3. Click General and then click About Windows Media Center.
4. Click Software Version to view the version of Windows Media Center in Windows 7.

Create a password reset disk in Windows 7

When you assign a password to your user account, you have the option of creating a password hint. If you enter an incorrect password then Windows 7 will display the password hint. As a good practice, create password reset disk to retrieve the password in case you are unable to make use of the password hint or you had not entered the password hint. You can create a password reset disk on a floppy disk or on a USB flash drive. Perform the following steps to create the password reset disk:
1. Click the Start button and then click Control Panel.
2. If the View by: is Category then click on User Accounts and Family Safety and then click User Accounts. If the View by: is Large icons or Small icons then click on User Accounts.
3. From the left pane, click Create a password reset disk to open the Forgotten Password Wizard.
4. On the Welcome to the Forgotten Password Wizard page, click Next, specify the location of the floppy disk or USB flash disk, click Next.
5. On the Current User Account Password page, enter the password that you use to login to your computer and then click Next.
6. Once you see 100% complete in the progress bar, click Next. On the Completing the Forgotten Password Wizard page, click Finish.

Which editions of Windows 7 can create a homegroup?

Homegroup can be created in Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Enterprise, and Windows 7 Ultimate.
