You cannot delete a name from the Name box. To delete a name, perform the following steps:
1. On the Formulas tab, in the Defined Names group, click Name Manager.
2. The Name Manager dialog box appears. From the list, click the name that you want to delete and click Delete.
3. Click OK to confirm the deletion.
4. Click Close to exit the Name Manager dialog box.
Tip:
You can delete multiple names at the same time by pressing the CTRL or SHIFT key and selecting the names.

Change a name in Excel 2007
When you change the name, all the references will be automatically applied. To change a name, perform the following steps:
1. On the Formulas tab, in the Defined Names group, click Name Manger.
2. The Name Manager dialog box appears. From the list, click the name that you want to change and click Edit...
3. In the Edit Name dialog box, in the Name box, type a name and click OK.
4. Click Close to close the Name Manager dialog box.

Scope of a name in Excel 2007
All names have a scope. A scope defines a boundary till which the name has access. The scope for a name can be local (accessible from within the worksheet) or global (accessible from any worksheet in the workbook).
- When creating a name from the Name box or Create from Selection command, the scope is set to global.
- When creating a name from the New Name dialog box, you can specify the scope to be local or global
Rules to follow when creating names in Excel 2007
There are few rules to be followed when creating names. They are:
- The first character of the name must be a letter (a to z or A to Z) or underscore ( _ ) or backslash ( \ ) character.
- You can have a combination of letters, numbers, underscore, backslash characters (Example: list_1). Spaces are not allowed (Example: list 1).
- Only underscore ( _ ), backslash ( \ ) and period ( . ) symbols are allowed.
- Names are not case sensitive. If you had already created a name (Example: Expenses_Jan) and later if you create EXPENSES_JAN, you will receive the warning message stating The name entered already exists. Enter a unique name.
- You cannot have a name that is the same as a cell reference (Example: C4).
- Maximum of 255 characters are allowed for defining names.
- If two names are same but differ in the scope level then the name with the least scope level will be present in the Name box. Take this into notice when creating names.
Ways to define names in Excel 2007
You can define names from the Name box, using the Create from Selection command, and using the New Name dialog box.
- Defining from the Name box is the quickest way to define the name.
- Defining name using the Create from Selection command creates names for you automatically based on the selections that you make.
- Defining names using the New Name dialog box provides options like setting the scope level for the names.

Define a name from the Name box in Excel 2007
To define a name from the Name box, click a cell or a range of cells (or) the cell(s) that hold the formulas or constants (or) a table or few cells in a table.
Once the selection is over, click the Name box and type a name. Press the ENTER key to accept the name.
