Rules to follow when creating names in Excel 2007

There are few rules to be followed when creating names. They are:
  • The first character of the name must be a letter (a to z or A to Z) or underscore ( _ ) or backslash ( \ ) character.
  • You can have a combination of letters, numbers, underscore, backslash characters (Example: list_1). Spaces are not allowed (Example: list 1).
  • Only underscore ( _ ), backslash ( \ ) and period ( . ) symbols are allowed.
  • Names are not case sensitive. If you had already created a name (Example: Expenses_Jan) and later if you create EXPENSES_JAN, you will receive the warning message stating The name entered already exists. Enter a unique name.
  • You cannot have a name that is the same as a cell reference (Example: C4).
  • Maximum of 255 characters are allowed for defining names.
  • If two names are same but differ in the scope level then the name with the least scope level will be present in the Name box. Take this into notice when creating names.
