Entering fractions in a cell in Excel 2007

To enter a fraction number into a cell, type the whole number first and leave a space. Type the fraction part and then press the Enter key.
For example, to enter the fraction number 3 1/4, click a cell and type 3 first. Type a space by pressing the SPACEBAR. Type 1/4.
You will see 3 1/4 entered in the cell. In the formula bar, you will see 3.25 entry.

Things to know:
  • If the number does not have a whole number part, for example 0 1/2 then type 0 (zero) first, type a space by pressing the SPACEBAR and then type 1/2. You will see 0.5 entry in the formula bar. If 0 and space is not typed then 1/2 is understood by Excel as a date entry and will display 2-Jan in the cell.
  • To check whether the entry is correct or not if you assume that the data is text and not a number, click any cell and type = 0 1/2 * 2. The equivalent of 0.5 * 2 is 1. You will see 1 in the cell.
  • The fractional number will be right-aligned as it is the default for numbers.
