Backspace does not delete the selected text in Word 2007

Normally when you highlight some text and hit the backspace key then the selected text gets deleted but for some reason if the selected text does not get deleted then perform the following steps to rectify this:
1. Open Microsoft Office Word 2007.
2. Click the Microsoft Office Button and click Word Options.
3. From the Word Options dialog box, in the left pane click Advanced.
4. From the right pane, under Editing options section, click to place a checkmark besides Typing replaces selected text.
5. Click OK.
